We’d Like to Sell You Something. But First: You’re Fine.

What If a Wellness Brand Didn’t Make You Feel Like Shit?

Last week we talked about how you're getting conned into buying a lot of shit.

Actually, not you, WE are getting conned into buying a lot of shit. There are few more enthusiastic consumers than Rachel (Target diehard, taught me the virtues of same-day delivery), Sara (will spend whatever she needs to on whatever it takes to look 29 for the rest of time—and she's crushing it so far!) and me (mostly comfy sweats and cozy birks that keep your feet warm but don't give you plantar fasciitis, IYKYK).

Whether or not you view consumerism as an issue is a different topic. What we take issue with is the WAY brands—specifically wellness brands—get you to buy things: pointing out that you should change this about your body, or hate that about it. Convincing women that they are bad so they will spend money on stuff makes us want to cry if we think about it too hard. (Note to self: check with therapist on that one.)

So...we launched a wellness product. We see the potential hypocrisy here. But what Strength Water is designed to do has nothing to do with fearing or disliking your physicality, and everything to do with embracing it: staying capable of doing the things you love, over the long term.

When I see my favorite people in the generation above me, it is clear to me that their mental health is very closely tied to how able they are to do the things they love. In other words, their happiness depends quite a bit on their physical capabilities.

When in one year between the three of us founders, we had two broken bones (dance floor and chairlift induced) and a smattering of stress fractures, we got deep into the science to figure out WTF was going on.

TL;DR: As women age, we tend to lose muscle mass and strength, and declining estrogen around menopause accelerates bone loss. It all gets...tired. Just like me.

That’s where Strength Water's protein, creatine, collagen, calcium and vitamin D3 come in. Alongside strength training and adequate nutrition, protein and creatine can help support muscle strength, while calcium and vitamin D support bone health. Collagen peptides have promising research behind them for supporting connective tissues. (Check out our website for way more peer-reviewed clinical studies than anyone asked for.)

After learning all this, we went to the place where everyone goes to find a product that could help with this universal problem: the internet. But a simple solution didn't exist. What did exist was five different supplements for a total of $150 per month. No thank you.

And here we are: founders of Plainspeak, purveyors of our first product, Strength Water. It drinks like a strawberry lemonade, helps you get more water, and helps give your body what it needs to stay awesome. (See? It already is awesome, just the way it is.)

If you have any other inconveniences relating to being a Grown Woman that you wish someone would create a product for, give us a holler! We'd love to help.
